Institute for Social Development Studies (Lembaga Pengkajian
Kemasyarakatan dan Pembangunan LPKP-Malang)
Lembaga Pengkajian Kemasyarakatan dan Pembangunan (LPKP) is an
institute of society and development studies. It is a non-profit
organization established in 1989 actively working to assist farmers
and their families to generate better income. The organization has
been entrusted with several economic development projects by international
sponsors such as Terre des Hommes, the Netherlands, FADO (Flemmish
Organization for Assistance in Development, Belgium) and a number
of national sponsors such as Dana Mitra Lingkungan and Bank Indonesia.
The collaboration with IPEC started in 1992 until 1997. The first
biennium collaboration was a health education services programme
for working children in Wonorejo. The second biennium collaboration
is providing community based health and educational services to
working children in rural areas in East Java. In third biennium
the aim was to strengthen the capacity of the Institute for Social
Development Studies implement community based action for working
children and transfer their know-how and skill to other organizations.
During the 3 biennium of collaboration over 620 working children
from 5 villages were provided with non formal education and pre-vocational
training through 4 learning activities centers. Over 400 children
were also provided with health services and 100 parents were trained
with income generating skills. Local community was made aware of
the importance of education and health for children through meetings,
home visits, information services, workshops, education slogan,
articles, and bulletins; capacity of the tutors and social workers
was increased through training and the networking was established
amongst NGOs which is now called JARAK in 1997 and the department
of education and culture.
The foundation was successful in motivating the community to solve
the problems faced by their children and also in convincing the
working children and their parents about the advantage of the action
programme for their children, although the programme did not succeed
to totally change the situation of child labour. But the parents
became aware of the importance of education and health for their
children and also the community in general.
