Lembaga Advokasi Anak Indonesia (LAAI) is a non
profit organization which was established by lawyers and several
NGO-activists in Medan in 1992. During 1993, LAAI filed several
child labour cases with the court, and they successfully brought
those cases up to public attention.
LAAI and IPEC started to collaborate in 1994 until 1995. The working
title was Legal Advocacy for children trapped on fishing platforms
in Medan, North Sumatra. During the collaboration LAAI formed a
legal team to handle child labour cases. This team collected information
on child labour in North Sumatera and on potential violation cases
which will later on in the project be filed with the court. Training
for young lawyers also conducted. The foundation also managed to
contact 10 NGO's in the Medan-area and 9 other government departments
and concerned parties which were able to supply LAAI with information
on child labour on fishing platforms and to support them when necessary.
As for the awareness raising brochure was produced to inform important
organizations and persons about the activities LAAI conducts, about
rules of law and about legal protection for children and publication
were made about child labour cases on fishing platforms on newspapers
and magazines.
