Kelompok Kerja Sosial Perkotaan (KKSP) is a social working group
on urban problems in Medan. It is a non-profit organization that
has been established in 1987. They have provided services to more
than 600 working children in the informal sector. They also have
extensive contacts with other NGO's all over the country, and also
with foreign NGO-donors such as Terres des Hommes, Children at risk,
and Childhope.
The collaboration with IPEC established in 1994/1995 by combating
child labour on fishing platforms in Langkat and Deli Serdang (North
Sumatra). They did not succeed in withdrawning children due to the
problems faced in the field from the government, jermal's owner/foreman
and the parents of the working children who valued their children
as their economic asset. Also the awareness raising activities didn
not succeed to reach the right target group and provide sufficient
information.
The foundation's staff recognized their weakness in advocacy and
campaign the issue, though they're known have a good capability
in educating, organizing, investigating and facilitating children/community.
The foundation was also weak in administrative activities, especially
in reporting.
