Yayasan Kusuma Buana (YKB) is a local NGO known for their active
participation is reproductive health and HIV/AIDS prevention activities.
YKB has been actively conducting HIV prevention programme through
peer education and self-help of sex workers, particularly sex workers
at Kramat Tunggak women's rehabilitation centre which used to be
the one of the localisations in Jakarta. YKB is staffed by general
practitioners and social workers.
Under biennium 1996/1997, together with Atma Jaya Research Centre,
YKB entrusted by IPEC to conduct a research study on child prostitution
in Jakarta, Bandung (West Java) and Banyuwangi and Surabaya (East
Java). The study describes clearly the life stories of the seven
child prostitutes aged below 16 years old who used in this grounded
study. The study also provides clear information on the roles of
family and the community in the hometown of the children that create
a significant environment in pushing the children into the prostitution.
The reasons of the demand side for child prostitution are also fully
described in the study. The information was probed through contact
with brothel owners and customers. The study also has been represented
in a mini seminar involving all related parties in Jakarta such
as Ministry of Social Welfare and Ministry of Manpower who have
declared to proceed with their ministry in following up the action
activities. Other international donors such as US-AID also show
their interest to participate in future prevention program for child
prostitution.
