Secretariat for Independent Indonesian Children (SAMIN) -Yogyakarta

SAMIN is an acronym of Sekretariat Anak Merdeka Indonesia, meaning Secretariat for independent Indonesian Children. The secretariat was formally established (but active long before) on 20 May 1987 in Yogyakarta. SAMIN is an independent organization working mainly with disadvantaged children on alternative education programmes which are generally non-formal in nature. As a non-profit NGO, SAMIN is assumed to serve as a forum for various alternative education programmes for children in Indonesia. Activities include: training for children's facilitators, conduct study and researches on alternative education; document various alternative education programmes and facilitate mutual sharing etc.

SAMIN started to have collaboration with IPEC in 1994 which the working title was efforts on the issue of working children: a documentation project proposal. During the collaboration 10 NGO's were selected to participate in the programme and each of the NGOs staff were trained as documenters. The trainees also given individual training sessions to improve their documenting knowledge and skills. Activities and programmes on working children which carried out by the selected 10 NGO's were documented by every responsible documenter. The documentation then consolidated into a book format and being published and distributed. The collaboration considered successful.
