-Yogyakarta
SAMIN is an acronym of Sekretariat Anak Merdeka
Indonesia, meaning Secretariat for independent Indonesian Children.
The secretariat was formally established (but active long before)
on 20 May 1987 in Yogyakarta. SAMIN is an independent organization
working mainly with disadvantaged children on alternative education
programmes which are generally non-formal in nature. As a non-profit
NGO, SAMIN is assumed to serve as a forum for various alternative
education programmes for children in Indonesia. Activities include:
training for children's facilitators, conduct study and researches
on alternative education; document various alternative education
programmes and facilitate mutual sharing etc.
SAMIN started to have collaboration with IPEC in 1994 which the
working title was efforts on the issue of working children: a documentation
project proposal. During the collaboration 10 NGO's were selected
to participate in the programme and each of the NGOs staff were
trained as documenters. The trainees also given individual training
sessions to improve their documenting knowledge and skills. Activities
and programmes on working children which carried out by the selected
10 NGO's were documented by every responsible documenter. The documentation
then consolidated into a book format and being published and distributed.
The collaboration considered successful.
