Pimpinan Daerah Muhammadiyah Katamadya Bandung Majelis Pembina
Kesejahteraan Sosial was established in 1957 and since then has
been very active in education, social welfare and health services.
As a national organization, Muhammadiyah was established in 1912
primarily to response to the need for more efficient and consistent
education of the Islam religion. This organization since then has
been known for its progressive movement and active involvement in
social welfare issues. Muhammadiyah has branches in most cities
in Indonesia.
The collaboration with IPEC started since 1992 until 1995. During
the collaboration there were 2 action programs carried out in Bandung.
The first biennium is to assist working children in the informal
and agricultural sector in developing a balanced personality and
as for the second biennium is to provide non Formal education and
pre-vocational training for working children in urban areas. During
the collaboration 842 children were provided with non-formal education
and pre-vocational training, recreational activities, and nutritional
supplements and health care. The number of the working children
was that the number of working children in Bandung had been reduced
by around 8.3% and the children that reached by the action programme
better developed in moral side. The parents of the working children
are guided and given counseling. To enhance the capacity of the
foundation in carrying out their duties, 30 full time social workers
are recruited and trained in issues of child development, social
policy and counseling. As for awareness raising on Child Labour
issues a meeting organized with other branches of Muhammadiyah and
local authorities.
