APINDO is a member of the IPEC's steering committee.
It is a huge organization with approximately 5,000 members in all
parts of Indonesia. APINDO is the only officially recognized employer's
organization in Indonesia which deal with industrial relations and
Human Resource Development issues. It represents most of the local
companies, including state-owned enterprises.
IPEC first collaboration with APINDO was in 1994/1995.
The working title was "Raising Awareness amongst employers
on the negative impact in using child labour on the business image
of Indonesia". The collaboration was not undergoing as planned,
only the seminar about judicial context of child labour in Indonesia
and the protection of child labour was held in Surabaya and Bekasi.
The second collaboration started again in 1998/1999 which the working
title is "Involving employers in combating child labour by
sensitising them on the child labour issue and assisting in the
establishment of a code of conduct on child labour". A seminar
on "Child Labour in the formal sector" was conducted which
was attended by Employers, NGOs and Department of Manpower and Transmigration.
The seminar acknowledges that the child labour cannot be eliminated
in a short time period, therefore the elimination of child labour
can be implemented effectively by an integrated and comprehensive
sectoral approach whether it is a prevention, promotion and rehabilitation
approach. The commitment of the employers is also essentially needed.
