Possible consequences Tend to suffer from cramps, skin inflammation and brain damages
due to the use of mercury and chemicals with bare hands.

injury and psychological trauma as a result of harassment and abuse;
emotional distress due to poor living and working conditions, ill
treatment by the employer and isolation from the family.

Region North Sumatra
Main Task lifting fishing nets with manually every 2 hours, select the
catch, boil them and drop nets back; salt and dry the catch and
place them in baskets.
Hazards Very long working hours; falling into the sea and being drowned
(most children cannot swim), being bitten by sea snakes or wild
fish which accidentally trapped into the nets, and being injured
by the net lifting equipment. Isolation for 3 or 4 months on sea
without breaks, sexually and verbally abused.
Possible consequences Negative living behaviour (alcoholics and drug addicts) and
irreparable psychological damage due to the verbal or sexual abused
by the foreman, coughs, headaches and nausea caused by long night
working hours, changing weather and strong winds.
n Occupation Children in footwear industry
Region Mostly founded in Bandung and Bogor (West Java)
Main Task repetitive tasks such as cutting leather or plastic with sharp
objects or machines, pasting soles and sticking decorative trimmings
to the shoe. Making holes in the material, sorting shoes, packing
them in boxes, cutting threads and sewing the shoes or accessories
Hazards long hours, combustible chemicals , like glue, and pack-aging
materials in poorly ventilated and congested surroundings. Inhaling
chemicals from the glue, cuts and infections from using sharp objects.
Possible consequences working with glue results in dizziness and respiratory difficulties.
Problems such as asthma, allergic reactions, headaches or even tuberculosis,
chronic fatigue, eye strain, muscular pains related to the neck,
shoulder and upper and lower back or other injuries
n Occupation Child labour in offshore work, with a focus on sea pearl diving
Region mainly in:Maluku island, South-east and South Sulawesi and other
small islands in the eastern part of Indonesia
Main Task diving and fishing in deep sea
Hazards Their deep-sea diving equipment consists of only a pair of wooden
goggles and short pantsbeing thrown out into the sea when their
rowboats were engulfed by strong waves during rough weather
Possible consequences Children are often attacked by poisonous jellyfish, sharks
and sea snakesSome children even die during these accidents.

Hazards Burns from explosions caused by combustion of refuse; cuts from
glass and metal; exposure to dangerous and toxic household and hospital
substances; smoke and fume inhalation; danger of being run over
by trucks and bulldozers
Possible consequences death from tetanus; chemical poisoning from toxic substances;
risk of contracting infectious diseases from decaying refuse; food
poisoning. Potentially lethal accidents from combustible materials,
bulldozers, trucks, etc.

Main Task Selling goods; providing services organizing traffic; begging;
stealing etc.
Hazards Exposure to drugs, violence, criminal activities; exposure to
exhaust fumes from vehicles; danger of becoming victims of police
harassment, gang violence and exploitation
Possible consequences danger of becoming a victim of drug addiction; effects on emotional
well-being leading to low self-esteem and feelings of rejection
and hopelessness; being branded a social outcast; being convicted
for criminal activities
Region All over the country, more specifically on Batam, Bali, North
Sumatra and Jakarta
Main Task providing sexual services, domestic services; begging; production;
drugs trafficking, etc.
Hazards mental and physical abuse; exposure to criminal activities;
all types of health risks caused by being economically exploited;
Possible consequences physically and mentally depression; death; isolation from family
can lead to negative living behaviour; social outcast by being branded
as a criminal
